The Backbone of Modern Energy
Every outlet, every hospital, every school—they all depend on the grid. When it works, power is affordable and reliable. But for decades, it's been assumed rather than invested in. And electricity demand is rising rapidly as countries electrify transport, industry and heating.
At the same time, energy security has become fragile. The grid is exposed to volatile fuel prices, geopolitical pressure, and extreme weather. And for a growing number of people, affordable reliable electricity does not just depend on where it’s generated, but on whether the grid can get the power to them.
The system is under strain. In many countries, new energy projects are delayed for years. Infrastructure built for a different era has too much to handle, creating a growing gap between what people need from the grid and what the grid can do.
We need to double grid capacity by 2040 and build 25 million kilometres of new infrastructure by 2030. That is roughly the distance from Earth to Venus. We know how to do it, but we are just not moving fast enough. Together we can change that.
